Welcome to the first day of Radix Running's Virtual Camp. We are going to publish a newsletter every day this week to let you know what each day of "camp" will hold. Hopefully, you will join us each day through the daily challenges and virtual runs. We are also offering several talks and sharing many of the things that we have found motivation from over the last couple of months. We hope you enjoy reading and participating!
The Long Run:
The long-run is a staple for all endurance events in track and XC. Nothing beats hitting the trails or roads with a group of teammates for 90 minutes. Every runner does the long run, but few know why. The effort is important for both physical and mental reasons.
First of all, as you run longer than an hour, your body begins developing better running economy with added capillaries and mitochondria. These additions help transport oxygen and process energy better. Other physical improvements include improved form, muscle development and running mechanics.
Secondly, the long run helps develop mental toughness. The focus and effort required to complete a good long run strengthens your ability to race the shorter distances. Pushing your limits in a long run will make you a better runner.
Running in Uncertain Times
Life is full of uncertainty. In an effort to help guide us during these unpredictable times, we are hosting a conversation with two amazing athletes; Peter Callahan and Erika Fluehr. Both of these runners have competed at the highest levels while also battling adversity and uncertainty throughout their careers. Please join us in a conversation about Training, Goal Setting, and Planning for the Future.

Daily Challenge
Historically, the Radix Long run has involved a grueling climb up the legendary Mapes! While we won’t be hitting Mapes this year, we are challenging you to get in some serious elevation during your long run this week. In order to compete, tag us in your GPS route or Strava elevation for verification. The winner will earn some swag along with eternal fame and Glory! Submissions can be from 8/15 or 8/16 and are due at 8PM tonight!
Song of the Day
Being from NJ, there is only one song that we could responsibly start the week with because after all “baby we were born to run...”
Mega Motivation
How often have you asked yourself why do you run? If you are like most of us, it’s a constant nagging question in the background during even the best training blocks. While we all have our own answers, we think this video from Coach Bennet does a great job of summarizing the emotional feeling of Why We Run!

Quote of the Day
"The ultimate is not to win, but to reach within the depths of your capabilities and to compete against yourself to the greatest extent possible. When you do that, you have dignity. You have the pride. You can walk about with character and pride no matter in what place you happen to finish." ~ Billy Mills
